In celebration of Earth Day, WWF is working with Google’s Made with Code to inspire teen girls to take action in support of conservation. As part of Google Made with Code’s Nonprofit hub, users can code and share personalized statements with calls to action to help the environment.

Participating in Made with Code and supporting conservation through your coded statement, does so much to increase awareness of the need to protect wildlife and its habitats. Beyond Earth Day, there are other simple steps to take that help species and make a positive impact on our planet

These actions can translate to a brighter future for both wildlife and people.

Plant for Monarchs

Monarch butterflies begin a journey of what can be more than 2,800 miles from the US and Canada to central Mexico. These winged creatures rely on milkweed—the only plant on which monarchs can lay their eggs and the only source of food for baby caterpillars—for survival along the way. Sadly, urban planning and agricultural expansion have paved and plowed over millions of acres of milkweed. But you can help! Plant the right species of milkweeds at home. You’ll attract beautiful butterflies to your yard and help ensure their survival. Here’s how to do it.

Shop Smart for Tigers

Tigers depend on forests for habitat and survival. Unfortunately, tiger forests are being cut down at a dangerous rate to meet the consumer demand for forest resources. The good news? You can help protect tiger and other wildlife habitats every time you shop by looking for labels that let you know the products you buy come from sustainable sources. Any time you’re buying a forest product, such as notebooks, tissues or greeting cards, look for the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label. When you see this symbol, you can be sure the product was created with material from a responsibly managed forest. By protecting the world’s forests, we ensure tigers and other species can have a healthy future.

Look for Labels to Help Elephants

Did you know that some of our favorite foods—such as ice cream, chocolate, and pizza—contain an ingredient that threatens some of the planet’s most important and sensitive habitats? Palm oil is the most widely consumed vegetable oil on the planet and it’s often found in packaged food and beauty products. But today the uncontrolled clearing of tropical rain forests for palm oil plantations impacts endangered species including elephants, rhinos and orangutans. Luckily, you can do something about it: Look for the RSPO or Green Palm labels on products that contain palm oil. These stamps of approval tell you the product was either made with certified sustainable palm oil, or in support of the transition to certified palm oil.

Speak Up for Climate Action and the Panda

While giant panda numbers are on the rise, their overall population numbers are still low. As a result, adapting to climate change is challenging for pandas. Bamboo, which makes up 90% of their diet, is also vulnerable to a changing climate. And it’s not just pandas. All kinds of wildlife are impacted by climate change. Shrinking habitats and increasing water scarcity are just some of the changes already evident and impacting the world’s biodiversity. Speak up for our planet and share your knowledge and passion with family and friends. Write a letter to the editor of your local news outlet. Your voice matters to wildlife—and all of us.
